Science Fair Projects Ideas for 8th Grade

Posted by Science Projects

In this article, we will find out science fair projects ideas for 8th grade. Any experiments or other creative activities done by students will always be interesting. It is scientific but fun. You know that science sometimes sounds so serious, right? The thrill even begins by the time the students try to combine the things needed for the experiments and see how it works. The students will be very excited to see the result. Learning by doing experiments will no doubts be useful for them to develop themselves. This is such a creative way to learn science.

The first simple experiment is “Boat with Soap Power”

Materials to use are:
1. Thick manila carton
2. Scissors
3. A pail or bowl full of water
4. Detergent

How it works
1.   Make a framework of a boat from the manila carton like showed in the picture. The size can be adjusted.
2.   Put the boat on the water in the pail or bowl.
3.   Add detergent little by little at the back of the boat. See what happens.
4.   The boat moves steadily. Why do you think it happens like this? It is caused by the influence of the surface tension. As we know that there is cohesion or intermolecular between water molecules especially in the surface that makes a thin and flexible layer (this is what we call surface tension). By adding detergent, the layers of water break and make the boat move.

Notes:
If you want to do this experiment one more time, you should clean the pail or bowl and use new clean water.

The second experiment is “Mothballs Jump.” The aim of the experiment is to make students know the position of things in the water. Whether it is sinking, floating, or drifting.

What you need to prepare are:
·      Mothballs
·      Vinegar
·      Water
·      Cake soda
·      Jam bottle
·      Spoon

How it works

1.   Fill the jam bottle with three fourth of water
2.   Add two spoonsful of vinegar and two spoonsful of cake soda, and then mix them until they are blended.
3.   Hit the mothballs to a table to make the surface part of the mothballs become harsh.
4.   Put the mothballs inside the jam bottle and see what happens.

Concepts:

First, the mothballs will sink because of the mass of the mothballs is higher than water. Next, there will be bubbles in the surface of the mothballs. These mothballs’ bubbles are the Carbon dioxide made by the vinegar and soda, and the mass of the carbon dioxide is lighter than water. Since the gas of carbon dioxide attaches to the mothballs, so the mothballs will look jumping.

There are many science fair projects ideas for 8th grade that actually can be found in everyday activities, hopefully those ideas above will make student be more creative.
